SAINT CHRISTOPHER

end of 3th – beginning of 4th century

A very tall Roman named Reprobus carried the travellers across the river on his back. Once he carried a child which was in reality Jesus Christ. When baptized, Reprobus took the name Christopher – ‘Christ-bearer’. He was always depicted huge in stature, with a child and a staff that was transformed by Christ into a fruit-bearing tree.
