SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

347–407

Archbishop of Constantinople, Doctor of the Church. The name Chrysostom means 'golden mouthed' and was given for his rhetoric skill. He was an opponent to the Empress Eudoxia, the influent wife of the Eastern Roman Emperor Arcadius; he was deposed and banished.

In Dürer's woodcut Saint John Chrysostom is depicted on the left, far from the spectator; in the centre of the woodcut we see the Emperor's daughter with a child.
